Blurred Vision
Lately, a handful of people have mentioned "you always have this
blur in your photos." Well, I don't always, but I very often do,
and it's quite intentional. I certainly could take sharper pictures, but
I happen to like them this way. Compare the image of the guitarist in
this gallery with the more "standard" shot below, and then tell
me which looks cooler! ;)

|
| Got
rhythm? It was time to get away from the DJ thang for a
night, so I headed up to the SF Mission District's Elbo
Room with Andrew for a night of live house, courtesy
of Monterrey, Mexico's KINKY. |
|
|
| We
knew it was going to be a good night - we pulled up on Valencia
to find the God Spot, a metered spot directly
in front of the Elbo Room. On first listen, Kinky's CD is
strong, but it's live where their talent really combines...
With layers of keyboards, jazzed-up guitar... |
|
|
| Some
seriously funked up bass, complex percussive rhythms, and
vocals en Español that I had no chance of understanding...
Kinky puts on an incredible, albeit short, show. (Hey, they
only have one album!) |
|
|
| Remember
when heavy metal bands would play parallel like this in
the 80's. That was SO cool. So is Kinky. |
|
|
| If
the cool live intrumentation isn't enough, though, how about
the fact that the lead singer/rhythm guitarst also pulls
triple duty as the DJ? With only two arms, I'm telling you,
this guy could outdo Vishnu. |
|
|
| But
then, who needs turntables when you've got screaming guitar
solos, solid bass, and, umm, an accordion??? Yes, I went
to see a performance incorporating an accordion. I'm still
awaiting my 50 lashes. |
|
|
| The
crowd on hand was a bit mellow at first, but as the music
really got going (and the $6 pint margaritas got flowing),
they started to loosen up... |
|
|
| By
midway through the set, everybody was dancing and all smiles.
Take Andrew for example... or me with my shitty grin. Or,
umm, I dunno who this is, but she liked dancing for the
camera. More power to her! |
|
|
| Now
you'll notice that this gallery isn't as, mmm, wordy as
other ones. Well, I think the pictures speak for themselves...
And if that's not enough, check out this video clip (1.8mb)
that I rolled together while messing around with my new
editing digs. Then kick yourself for not having been there!
